Margaret Slingluff Kindy

Margaret Slingluff, born in 1848, was the youngest of nine children born to William Henry Slingluff and Elizabeth Ulrich Schlater, who lived Whitemarsh and Lower Providence Townships in Montgomery County, PA, just northwest of Philadelphia. Margaret’s elder sister Hannah Slingluff Davis and her family are also subjects of this blog (I found 12 photos of them at Blue Peacock Antiques in Winchester, Virginia!) but I thought Margaret deserved a blog post of her own - she had her own family and descendants, after all.

The back of Margaret’s photo gives us an introduction to her family: it states that she married Harry Kindy and had three children: Harry, Mamie, and Bert. Let’s look into that a little more.

Margaret, or Maggie as she was known, did marry a man with the surname Kindy, although based on their children’s marriage certificates, it appears he went by John. His name could have been John Harry, or John Henry. However his family knew him, we won’t really know, because he passed away less than 10 years after he married Maggie, leaving her a widow with three young children. 

The 1880 census indicates Maggie’s children were Joseph H., born 1873 (the ‘Harry’ written on the back of her photo), Mary E., born 1875 (‘Mamie’), and John A., born 1877. It appears ‘A’ is short for Albert, so this last child is certainly ‘Bert’, as written on the back of Maggie’s photo.

Details on Maggie’s death have yet to be found.

Maggie’s eldest son Joseph, born 1873, who apparently went by Harry if we are to trust the family notes on the back of her photo, married Adah Hallman in 1898. Unfortunately Harry died that same year, and left no descendants with Adah.

The middle child, Mamie, died as a teenager in 1890 and leaves no descendants.

The youngest child, Bert, married Emma Umstead Davis in 1903. They had five children - two of which they outlived - and remained in Upper Providence Township until their deaths in 1961 and 1959 respectively. Their three children who survived into adulthood and had families of their own were:

• Frances Kindy (b. 1905), married Robert Geasey in 1929. They had one daughter, Frances, born in 1932. Frances married a Neducsin in 1957.

• Joseph Kindy (b. 1908), details unknown

• Margaret Kindy (b. 1914), married Donald Holman and had at least one child, Sara, born 1934.
