Raymond Von Wald

After researching two other WWII-era photos from the lot I purchased in West Virginia (Roy Aspen and Ray Dillavou) and finding out both Roy and Ray were from South Dakota, I turned to the next photo in line, of Raymond Von Wald, and expected the same. He must have also been from South Dakota: South Dakota is what must be the link between all these photos.

Lo and behold, the first four results that returned on FamilySearch were the 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 census listing Raymond Von Wald living in... you guessed it: South Dakota. And in 1940, Raymond was living in Lead, South Dakota specifically: the same town Roy Aspen lived in.

So who was Raymond, other than a Navy veteran?

Well, Newspapers.com couldn't tell us much in this case, unfortunately.

Raymond was born on January 7, 1901 in South Dakota to David Von Wald and Rachael Bevan who worked as farmers. He grew up in Gettysburg, SD and in 1927 married Sadie Shaw.

In 1940, prior to enlisting, Raymond, Sadie, and their five children Doris, Betty, David, Dennis and Patricia lived in Lead. Raymond was working as a miner at the gold mine. It is hard to imagine how Sadie would have taken care of all those children while Raymond was at war.

Raymond died in February 1970.

Their first daughter, Doris, was married to Joseph Allen Dawson in 1947 in Vancouver, WA.

Their second daughter, Betty, married Ralph Alleman in 1950 in Vancouver, WA.

Their first sone, David, married Beverly Schnitzel in 1951.

Their daughter Patricia married Raymond William Dragowsky in 1956 in Portland, OR.

Do you recognize any of these names? Help us return Raymond's photo to his family.
